June 10, 2010

HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER! HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER! HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER! HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER!

(Thursday is a minimum day!)

Dear Families and Friends,

It is a bittersweet moment as we congratulate and say goodbye to our 113 sixth graders who are being promoted to junior high. Yesterday's ceremony only reminded us of the students. outstanding academic achievement, superior athletic skills, terrific school spirit, artistic talent, enthusiasm for life, and friendly, positive attitudes. The great UCLA coach John Wooden said, "Ability may get you to the top, but character will keep you there." Truly, the class of 2010 is on a path to staying ON TOP for a long time!

What a wonderful event! The "Starry Night" Auction was amazingly well organized, beautiful, festive, happy, and fun! Parents Anne Orfila and Bibi Taylor stepped up to lead an army of volunteers, inspire many donors, create an evening of fun, and always keep a patient smile on their faces. I loved working with them! I am also so grateful to Kathleen Brontsema, Julianne Hastings, Nichol Des Jardins Clark, Rayanna Cole Dombroski, Lauri Koc, Lisa Moreno, Terry Mehr, Kristin Wright, Dawn Osborn, Nico Cervantes, and Konrad Kono. Wow!

--The Grade 4-6 Track Meet on Friday was fantastic! Mr. Holbrook organized a great event! Thank you to the parents who assisted Jeff, teachers, and staff to make it a day of fun, team spirit, and some unbelievable athletic performances (and records)!

--A team of nine traveled to Anaheim on Friday to accept the 2010 Distinguished School Award. It was an exciting and proud moment. There are 5,770 public elementary schools in California, but only 484 schools met the tough standards of a Distinguished School. And, of the 484 schools, only 8 were charter schools. Bravo, Peabody!

--Interested in a summer sailing scholarship for your child? The forms are online at http://www.sbyf.org

--Last call for yearbook orders (due June 18) and photos for the yearbook!

--If interested, Konrad and Sarah Kono are registered at Babies R US: http://www.babiesrus.com and 2340 N. Rose Avenue, Oxnard.

A Message from Katie Marrs: A last word? I have been asked if I have any remarks for the last Panther Press this year. As I have said to a few friends, no one would believe I am at a loss for words! But it is true. I have enjoyed my extensive time here at fabulous Peabody Charter School, both in the olden days and during this year. I have met so many truly wonderful people, both families and school staff. Some of my best friends are associated with my time here at school. One telling phrase I have always used as I leave my house each morning: while saying goodbye to my husband, I tell him I am "going to school," not "going to work." I suppose that is how I have always felt about my school. So this is farewell, not goodbye. I still have grandchildren here, so I hope I will see you on occasion. Thanks for all my memories, Katie

A Message from Nancy Cole: As June 10 approaches, I have been asked on several occasions how I'm feeling. I can only tell you that I have never been a "count the days to the end" sort of teacher, I am usually kind sad to say good-bye to my current crop of students and families, and I am always looking forward to the slower pace of summer and its opportunity for much needed relaxation and fun! But clearly this June is different for me. I can tell you that I am looking forward to new possibilities! As I look back, though, I have nothing but happy memories. I thank you all for being part of that. I appreciate so much the thoughtful cards, conversations, and good wishes I have received. One can only be in awe at what the talents and time put in by so many at Peabody have accomplished this year. It's obvious that this school remains one of Santa Barbara's finest! So to those of you who are continuing, know that you're in good hands. To those leaving, know that you¹ve been part of a wonderful family and you can take all that you have learned here with you into the next part of your life. Thank you, thank you, thank you... With love and appreciation, Nancy Cole

--Blackjack, the Peabody Rock Band, is playing at Chase Palm Park for The Buddy Walk for The Down Syndrome Association on June 19 around noon. Come out and support your rockers!
