The
Peabody Charter School Math Program is designed to balance
conceptual understanding, basic computational skills, problem
solving, and the interdependence of all three. This program
provides students with knowledge and competence in all five
California State standards: Number sense, algebra and functions,
measurement and geometry, statistics, data analysis, and probability,
mathematical reasoning.
Peabody
Charter School has aligned its mathematics program to the
California Mathematics Content Standards. Teachers promote
understanding of these standards by introducing topics with
concrete activities, often hand-on, real-world situation
to promote conceptual understanding. Student then connect
their learning to the more abstract computation procedures.
This concrete-connecting-abstract design enhances the mathematics
skill of Peabody Charter students. Students are provided
ample opportunities to explain their thinking, verbally
and in writing, formally and informally, as communication
in mathematics is an essential skill.
